18th Annual Fred Doty Classic...
|
The tournament was dedicated to Bill Johnson, who passed away recently. We had a lower turnout this year with 37 bowlers turning out to bowl in the 19th Annual tournament. We did receive 8 new novice bowlers and they all seemed to enjoy their first experience bowling in an AWBA tournament. We hope they continue to bowl and become members of the AWBA. In fact, Wayne Miller (sang the National Anthem wonderfully) joined the association as our newest life member.
Steve Lucas and George Holscher won the Paul Roman Doubles championship. J.K. Johnston and his team won the Van Varden Up & Down event. The top five scratch scores advanced to the scratch division after qualifying. There were some great scores turned in this year by bowlers in all the divisions. Gary Ryan bypassed the 500 club and went straight into the 550 club with his fine 597 scratch series in the second qualifying block. He is improving every event and has not missed a tournament since joining last May. The Craig Richards Sportsmanship award went to Gary Ryan and is well deserved.
Individual honors went to high qualifiers, Holscher (2320), Norm Bissell (2532), and Janet Norwood (2606) respectively. George also won HSS (652), Keith Scott HSG (2258) in scratch; Eddy Hutchens HSS (573), Steve Lucas HSG (212), Bissell HHS (729), Wally Farrington HHG (251) in “A” and Gary Ryan HSS (597), Keith Douglas HSG (181), Norwood HHS (757), Doug Beckley HHG (255). Keith Douglas also won the most improved honors this year with an increase of 348 pins.
Thanks to PVA National and the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of PVA, and a special thanks to Ray for all of his hard work and capable scoring, to Sharon and Keith Douglas, Janet Norwood, Caroline Weaver, to the Auxiliary members who helped out too. Hope to see you all next year!
