This year’s tournament had many new faces in attendance which was great. It is always a pleasure to have new bowlers attend this event. The Fred Doty Classic was held in memory of Anna Korchak. It was an exciting few days and the roll offs were even more exciting than usual.
The tournament began on Friday afternoon with the Roman Doubles. Don Porpora and James “Sully” Sullivan were the victors. Friday night the VanVarden Up and Down event was held, with 26 teams participating. The event was won by Harold Bowman and his team, Second place went to Michael VanDyke’s team and Steve Edgar’s team took third. Everyone had a great time as usual.
Saturday and Sunday brought the singles event. William Jakovac was the lone novice. Scratch division was won by George Holscher, He was also the high qualifier with 2470 total pins. Harold Bowman defeated Michael VanDyke in the roll off to win “A” division and Michael VanDyke was the high qualifier with 2602 total handicap pins. Thomas Martineau, a new bowler out of Florida, was the “B” division victor and high qualifier with 2617 total handicap pins. George Holscher was most improved bowler increasing his total pin count by 359 pins. Dave Nelson was seen throughout the tournament offering help and encouragement to the new bowlers. He was awarded the Craig Richards sportsmanship award.
The culmination of the Fred Doty Classic was the banquet. The banquet was filled with a lot of joy and bitter sweet moments as Anna was honored, her grandson (3 year old Ryan) sat at the head table in her place, as honorary tournament director. Ray Korchak announced he was stepping down as tournament director and this was the last Fred Doty Classic.
Caroline Weaver and Janet Norwood announced they will be taking over as co-directors of the tournament and next year will be the First Annual Doty/Korchak Classic. It is the wish of the new directors and tournament committee to make the Doty/Korchak Classic the best tournament we have held. There could be no better way to honor Anna’s memory. Thank you to all that participated, especially the new bowlers. We look forward to seeing each and every one of you in many AWBA tournaments to come.
