The AWBA returned to Michigan after a long absence for the 1st Annual MPVA tournament and was treated to a fine event. We had enlisted two novice bowlers, Geoff Hopkins from VA and Ray Brown from MI. Unfortunately, neither of them was able to complete the tournament. We appreciate Geoff coming out to represent the National office and hope he gets his arm issues resolved so that he can resume bowling in the near future. Ray had personal commitments that prevented him from competing as well.
A couple of MI bowlers returned to tournament competition as well, as Ron Buhl and Kevin DeBono both completed the tournament. Fortunately, some other Michigan bowlers stopped in, including charter member and Hall of Fame member, Larry Seymour, Chuck Schafer and Chris Estep. We hope they will bowl next year!
Harold Bowman and Norm Bissell won the doubles event held on Thursday afternoon. Al Uttecht teamed with Cathy Hikade to win the Up and Down event on Friday night.
Overall, the bowlers found the center lane conditions challenging but the event was highly competitive throughout the qualifying rounds. The top five scratch scores advanced to the scratch division after qualifying. Mark Shepherd (Scratch), Wayne Webber (A) and Scot Severn (B) were the high qualifiers respectively.
Individual honors went to Al Uttecht HSS (605), Mark Shepherd HSG (245), John Gould HHS (685) and Gabriel Diaz de Leon HHG (251).
Thanks to PVA National, Michigan PVA, and a special thanks to Scot Severn and the entire MPVA crew Mike Harris, ED, Kevin Elya, President, Jan Black, Jaclyn Kochis, Bonnie Welbaum, Bonnie Williams, Linda Highland and Service Office volunteers, Chuck Henning, Marilyn Kittrell and Stephanie Strickland for their great effort in making sure that all participates were well taken care of. Great Job!!! We all had a great time and we hope to see you all next year!
