Greetings from the USBC Championship in Reno Nevada. The AWBA National Team was represented by the following bowlers: Dave Nelson (NE), John Budd (IN), Peter Arballo (CA), Robert Kimrey (NC),Toodie Perry (CA) and AWBA National Team Captain Kevin Schaefer (CA) did us proud as they bowled in Reno this month. We were honored in having the first woman bowler, Toodie Perry from California join the AWBA National Team at this USBC Championship and as usual, Toodie did quite well for her first time going to this event.
The Team event went off on Sunday night with the team bowling next to a team from Ohio who had never seen wheelchair bowlers before. Kevin Schaefer was not going to bowl the Team event, however; the team from Ohio asked him to sub with them and luckily we were able to bowl right next to one another. Some of the team members explained how we as wheelchair bowlers bowl our game as well introducing this team to the AWBA, its history and how this organization has given us an opportunity to enjoy a sport otherwise not afforded until Richard Carlson came along and bowled in the 1962 Louisville Open as the only wheelchair bowler. Some of the bowlers were asked to join this team from Ohio at the next USBC Championship in 2011 to be held in Reno NV. Things have surely changed since that day and the AWBA is forever grateful. The Doubles and Singles event went well with the team even though the lanes were a little tougher than normal but overall, everyone had a wonderful time and looking forward once again in representing the AWBA and its National Team at the USBC Championship at some point in the future.
